Abstract

The Southeastern Life Insurance Company records consist of by-laws, a charter, correspondence, contracts, employee and training manuals, memos, personal papers, policy specimens, rate books, reinsurance agreements, reports, tax returns and other tax information, and other material; and oversize material in the form of agent / agency registers, annual statements, cash books, journals, ledgers, a photograph with negative, policy registers, trial balance books, and stock certificates. They span the time period from 1905-1983, with the bulk of the items dating from 1910-1942. The records document the firm's insurance activities, particularly the financial and reinsurance aspects. It also includes material documenting the firm's role in providing insurance coverage for industry, especially the textile industry. Topics reflected in the recordings include American and South Carolina insurance companies, cotton mills, the Hipp family, W. Frank Hipp, insurance and reinsurance, Liberty Life Insurance Company, and South Carolina industries. Ritchie and others, particularly J. K. Davis, began soliciting and collecting historical and archival documents from employees and departments of the company.
